WHAT IS THE MEANING OF DECKING?

DECKING

A deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and can be connected to a building. The term is a generalization of decks as found on ships.

Functions and materials
Wood or timber “decking” can be used in a number of ways: as part of garden landscaping, to extend living areas of houses, and as an alternative to stone based features such as patios.

Decks are made from treated lumber, composite lumber or composite material.

Decks are often built from pressure treated wood. Pressure treated wood is long-lasting and holds up to wet and icy weather conditions. Pressure treated wood however is treated with chemicals. It is also important to note that both softwood and hardwood decks will need to be finished after installation using either an oil or varnish to prevent weathering, wear, mould, algae and wood boring insects.

Wood Decks vs. Composite Decks

A deck can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years if made from untreated wood and can last as long as 50 years for treated wood or composite materials. Because a deck is a long-term investment and you will be enjoying it for decades to come, it’s important to understand your choice of materials before starting your building project.

Both wood and composite materials come in low and high quality, so cost or quality is not the only factor. It’s commonly known that composite materials require less maintenance, hence, their cost is usually higher. But they do require some maintenance, and other factors come into play as well.

Palisade fencing is constructed by using 2 horizontally running steel rails and connected to vertical steel joists. This type of construction design makes palisade fencing a strong and inaccessible barrier to keep the intruders away and enhance the security protection.

Palisade Fencing can be made in a variety of sizes from the standard 1m to 3m tall, it can also be designed and built to meet any specific size to meet your requirement.

BENEFITS OF METAL PALISADE FENCING

The design and the construction of palisade fencing has provided a number of benefits for protecting and securing properties, including:

Difficult to climb – Most palisade fences are designed to make it very hard to climb, palisade spiked top finishes increases the risk of injury to an intruder.

High security – Palisade fences can be finished with extra anti-climb features and security measures, such as sharp and pointy toppings, extra height steel pales as well as security cameras and warning signage. This is perfect for the dangerous public hazard’s zones, factories and industrial compounds as well as commercial warehouses alike.

Low maintenance – Steel palisade fences are weather resistant and does not required regular maintenance.

Horizontal Trellis Fencing

Generally a less expensive alternative to solid board fencing, vinyl and ornamental iron, a horizontal trellis fence creates an open and airy feel in a small space while providing a structural boundary to keep pets and children safely inside your yard. You can also hide unwanted views of garbage cans or a neighbors shed or driveway behind a trellis fence.

Horizontal trellis fencing ideas to add a new look to your property are now widely used for giving your garden a beautiful and unique look. Therefore, choosing the right fence is very important. This type of fencing offers the chance to add a stunning contemporary aesthetic to your property.

Horizontal fence is a trend nowadays and widely used around the globe. Horizontal lines can help expand your yard. Not literally, meaning horizontal lines are known to give an illusion of longer width. Visually a horizontal fence will make your yard look more spacious.

Horizontal fences really draw the eye and add variation to your backyard. Most people will use wood for price and availability.

Post And Rail Fence

Post and rail is a basic ‘country style’ fence using solid timber posts and a choice of number of rails and has three main variations to choose from: cleft, half-round and square cut. Post and rail is great for livestock, but also demarcation; it has the benefit of being able to deal with land that curves.

Individuals who prefer post and rail fences often value its simplicity and open design.
One of the advantages of this type of fencing is that it doesn’t restrict your view as much as other types. This makes it ideal for both agricultural use and gardens as it allows you to see into your paddock or admire the view surrounding your field or garden.

Post and rail fencing is often used to define property lines and establish boundaries on homesites with larger acreage as it is a more economical choice than solid wood, vinyl or ornamental iron. Plus the visibility post and rail affords will not detract from site lines and expansive views. Post and rail is also a preferred style for owners of horse farms and small ranches. Additionally, wire mesh can be attached to deter predators and create a secure area for livestock such as cattle, sheep and horses.

Post and rail fencing can blend with any design of your property. Unlike other kinds of fencing, post and rail fencing is quite simple. Post and rail fencing is beneficial to property owners because it is simple yet classy, inexpensive yet durable, and modifiable yet stress-free to mount. Here are some of the top benefits:

  • AESTHETIC
  • COST
  • DURABLE
  • SIMPLE TO INSTALL
  • CUSTOMIZABLE

AESTHETIC
It has added aesthetic value. It looks good on both narrow and wide properties and even on flat and sloping terrains. It allows for an open view for visitors to see the beauty of your area on the inside of the fence, without discounting its “no trespassing” appeal. Other fences obstruct the view. You can get your delineation without destroying the sight of your property. Not only is it visually attractive, it is also durable.

COST
It is cost-effective. Depending on the style of post and rail fencing that you choose, prices vary but what is for sure is that, relative to the prices of other types of fences, it is more economical. You can opt for the traditional wooden ones since they are the cheapest. In addition, there are spaces in between rails so you save on materials.

DURABLE
It is hard-wearing. You get good value for your money. You need not change it every year or two. At the same time, it is prone to decay because it is made of organic material. Nonetheless, post and rail fencing is comparatively less likely to deteriorate over time than its counterparts. It is by nature sturdy so whether you will use it for security or for keeping livestock in, it is still a recommended selection.

SIMPLE TO INSTALL
It is simple to install. You can quickly have it erected because its installation basically entails fitting pegs to holes. It is not time-consuming to set up. In the same way, it is hassle-free to uninstall as well. Note, however, that it can be permanently mounted on the ground by pushing the poles deeper into the soil.

CUSTOMIZABLE
It is adjustable and customizable. You can modify each rail or pole without much difficulty. Furthermore, upon purchase, you can choose the height of each post and the width of each rail contingent on your preferences and the size of your area. There is no need to buy fences that are ready-made (one size fits all) as they rigid. Should you need to adjust your property boundaries, you can just disassemble the posts and rails and then have them re-installed where the new borders are. If you want to tighten your security, you can wind some barbed wire around the rails.

Picket Fence

NoonPicket fences are a type of fence often used decoratively for domestic boundaries, distinguished by their evenly-spaced vertical boards, the pickets, attached to horizontal rails. Picket fences are particularly popular.

Why is it called a picket fence?

A picket fence is usually 0.91 m (3 ft) to 1.21 m (4 ft) tall. A horizontal top rail and bottom rail are attached to fence posts, which are installed upright into the ground. Evenly-spaced boards are affixed vertically to the rails. These boards with pointed tops are called “pickets” for their resemblance to the pointed stakes historically used by infantry to repel cavalry. Typically for enclosed picket fences, a gate is required to provide an entry point.

Picket fences can be made of several types of materials. Historically, wood has been the most popular material used for picket fences. It can be untreated, treated, or naturally insect- and rot-resistant. Other options include polyvinyl chloride and aluminium.

Using wooden pallets is an inexpensive and easy way to create an attractive picket fence for your yard. This is also a great great recycled-items project.

Installation

The first step in installing a picket fence is to insert the posts into the ground. Traditionally this is done by digging deep holes (usually 36in x 12in) either manually or with a power auger. The posts are then placed upright into the ground and concrete is poured to cement them into place. Once they are set, the horizontal rails are affixed to the posts using fasteners, and finally the pickets can be attached to the horizontal rails. By far the most time-consuming part of installing a picket fence is setting the posts.

There are some vinyl picket fence systems on the market that are installed without digging holes or pouring concrete. These are installed by driving pipe deep into the ground, which is how chain link fence has been installed for years. This is the most popular way to install vinyl fence in Western Canada, where the deep frost can heave concrete footings out of the ground.

Larch Lap Fence With Wooden Posts

  1. Larch lap fence panels are a popular type of budget fencing option made with rough-sawn horizontal wooden slats, a very common sight in many gardens today. Larch lap panels are sometimes called waney lap or overlap, but the different names all refer to the same type of fence panel. An affordable larch lap fence panel can be a great starting point if you’re looking at renewing a garden boundary.

This traditional type of overlapping fence provides privacy to your garden, so it’s an affordable screening solution for boundary fencing. Larch lap panels are usually provided in standard 6-foot widths, but various heights are always readily available – 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft are very popular.

Larch Lap fencing is a popular and traditional choice for garden privacy. This kind of fencing is similar to the Closeboard, but is not as robust and long-lived, however larch lap fencing is faster to put up, and cheaper to install and replace. Larchlap fences are still reliable for privacy and security however, and can be installed with gates. Like close board fencing, it can be used with timber posts and gravel boards.

In terms of installation, larch lap panels can either be nailed between or to the face of timber posts. Given their less robust form, we suggest adding concrete gravel boards to keep larch lap fence panels off the ground to prevent rot, but this is completely optional. Trellis can also be added to the top as an optional decorative feature, but don’t forget to make sure your posts are tall enough to fix trellis above the height of the fence panel.
